NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIPS TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT ONTARIO LACROSSE FESTIVAL

August 17, 2010 – The Warrior/OLA Novice Provincial Championships took place on the final 2010 Festival weekend and provided much entertainment for all those in attendance.  With an increase in team participants, the competition was tight in all five divisions.

In the Novice ‘A’ Championship, Whitby took a commanding 4-0 lead until Clarington’s Graydon Hogg scored with five seconds left in the second period.  Clarington could not use the goal as enough momentum to power them back into the game and Whitby took home the Warrior/OLA Novice ‘A’ Championship by a score of 6-2.  Whitby was lead by captain Christian Clark with 2g, 2a and Dyson Williams with 2g, 1a.

The Novice ‘B’ Championship saw a tentative first period come to an end deadlocked at one goal apiece between Barrie and Whitby 2.  Barrie broke the game open in the second with 4 goals, propelling them to a 5-2 lead.  The teams exchanged goals in the third but when the buzzer sounded, Barrie was the 6-3 victor to claim the Warrior/OLA Novice ‘B’ Championship.  The Tornadoes were lead by Cameron Acchione with 1g, 2a and Matt Nastasiuk with 2g while Mark Kyle had 2g for Whitby 2.

Shelburne took on Guelph 2 in the Warrior/OLA Novice ‘C’ Championship game.  Shelburne jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period thanks in large part to Trent Verbeek’s two goals.  Guelph 2 closed the gap in the second but still found themselves down 4-3 going into the final period.  Verbeek completed his hat trick with an empty net goal to help seal the 7-4 victory for his Shelburne team to take the Novice ‘C’ Championship.  Matt Dunsmoor lead Guelph 2 with two goals in the loss.

The Novice ‘D’ Championship featured two strong teams from zone 6 – Peterborough 2 and West Durham.  West Durham seemed to have control early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Peterborough 2 got on the board to end the first at 3-1.  The intermission break seemed to recharge the Peterborough 2 squad as they came out and fired five goals to take control of the game.  The teams traded goals in the third but Peterborough 2 closed the game strong and recorded the 8-5 victory for the Warrior/OLA Novice D Championship.  West Durham was lead by 2 goals from Austin Aicken while Owen Hiltz had 2g, 1a and Matt McKnight had 2g in the Peterborough 2 victory.

The Novice ‘E’ Championship featured St. Catharines and Barrie.  St. Catharines were very persistent and got on the scoreboard at least once in each period.  They also had a very balanced attack which was too much for Barrie.  St. Catharines took home the Warrior/OLA Novice ‘E’ Championship by a score of 5-2, lead by Tanner Vail’s two goal effort.
