EXCITING ACTION THROUGHOUT GIRLS BOX LACROSSE

August 17, 2010 – Girls box lacrosse has taken off in Ontario and was on full display at this year’s Ontario Lacrosse Festival in Whitby.  With four age divisions and seven champions to be crowned, it was an exciting time at the Festival.

In the Pee Wee division, Centre Wellington battled with heavyweight Whitby.  Whitby jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and never looked back.  The balanced scoring attack from Whitby was too much for Centre Wellington, as Whitby took the 2010 Pee Wee Girls Provincial Championship 6-1.  Kristine Webber lead the charge for Whitby with 2 goals and Abby Clayton chipped in Centre Wellington’s only goal in the losing effort.

With convincing first and second round wins in the Bantam Girls division, Peterborough and Whitby earned the right to battle it out for the ‘A’ Championship.  Whitby came out firing, scoring 9 goals before Peterborough could get on the board in the third period.  Whitby was lead by Kendra Parenteau’s 3 goals and 2 assists, as well as 2-goal performances by Kennedy Milburn and Donna Ward.  Their offence overpowered Peterborough and propelled Whitby to a 10-1 final and Bantam Girls ‘A’ Provincial title.  The ‘B’ final featured Hamilton and Niagara-on-the-Lake.  Hamilton was first on the scoreboard, scoring the only goal of the first period.  They could not hold onto the lead as NOTL stormed back with 3 goals in the second and added two more in the third for a 5-1 victory and Bantam Girls ‘B’ Championship.  NOTL was lead by Madeleine Skubel’s 2 goal effort.

In the Midget division, exciting action was found in both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ divisions.  Whitby and Burlington clashed in the ‘A’ final.  Whitby held onto a 3-1 lead for the Midget Girls ‘A’ Provincial title despite not scoring in the final frame.  Whitby had a balanced scoring attack with goals from 3 different players.  In the ‘B’ division, Centre Wellington was lead by captain Taryn Collins’ hat trick in the first period to defeat Clarington 6-2 to capture the championship.

The Intermediate Girls rounded out the girls championships with exciting ‘A’ and ‘B’ action.  In the ‘A’ final it was Centre Wellington taking the championship in a close 5-4 game over Arthur.  Centre Wellington was lead by a 2 point performance from Rebecca Clement while Brianna Plester scored twice for Arthur in the losing effort.  Burlington overpowered Wallaceburg 9-1 in the Intermediate Girls ‘B’ Championship game.  Already up 2-1, Burlington exploded for 7 unanswered goals for the convincing win.  They were lead by Jessica Kras’s 3g, 1a showing while Brianna Bolancer scored the only goal for Wallaceburg.
