BANTAM TALENT ON FULL DISPLAY ON CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY

August 17, 2010 – Four new Provincial Champions were crowned on August 1st in the Gait/OLA Bantam Provincials.

The Gait/OLA Bantam B Championship was the tale of two periods.  After jumping out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period, Welland looked poised to make a run at London for the championship.  But in the second, London came out firing with an impressive 7 goal run to lead 8-4 after two periods.  There was no scoring in the third as both goalies shut the door and London was crowned the Gait/OLA Bantam B Champions.  London’s comeback victory was lead by captain Chris Willman’s 3g, 1a and Johnny Feliciano’s 3g efforts.

The C Championship looked to be a tight defensive battle as Mississauga took a 1-0 lead after one period over Windsor.  Being down 3-1 heading into the 3rd period did not phase Windsor as they completed a dramatic comeback to send the game into overtime with just 11 seconds left in the third period.  Windsor was unable to carry their momentum into the extra frame as Mississauga scored two unassisted goals in overtime to claim a 6-4 victory and the Gait/OLA Bantam C Championship.

The D Championship looked to be another defensive battle with Cambridge clinging to a 1 goal lead after the first period over Innisfil.  Max Healy got Innisfil on the board in the second with his first of 4 points in the game.  Innisfil took a two goal lead early in the third period only to have Cambridge come back to tie it before captain Eric Mowdslov scored the game winner, sealing the 4-3 victory for Innisfil.  Cambridge’s leading scorer was Hayden Kafadar with 3 assists in the losing effort.

In the E Championship, Midland looked to be the more comfortable team as they headed into the second period with a 4-2 lead and all the confidence in the world.  The confidence spilled over as Midland erupted for another 5 goals in the second to take a 9-3 lead.  Mississauga outscored Midland in the third but it was too little too late as Midland was crowned Gait/OLA Bantam E Champions with a final score of 10-5.  Top scorers for Mississauga were Colton Merrick with 1g, 1a and Julien Guay with 2a in the losing effot.  Midland was lead by captain Nick Heins with 4g, 1a and Bruce Leadbeater with 3g.
