MIDGET LACROSSE HITS HARD AT THE ONTARIO LACROSSE FESTIVAL

August 17, 2010 – The Under Armour/OLA Midget Provincial Lacrosse Championships took over the Ontario Lacrosse Festival at Iroquois Park Sports Centre from August 6-8 and provided exciting and competitive action across the divisions.  Of the four championships handed out, none ended with a goal difference greater than three.

The Midget ‘B’ Championship featured two very evenly matched teams, Akwesasne and Owen Sound.  There was great goaltending displayed by both teams throughout the game.  Akwesasne outscored Owen Sound 2-1 in the first period which became the deciding period as teams traded goals in both the second and third periods.  Owen Sound couldn’t buy another goal to tie it up and Akwesasne took home the Under Armour/OLA Midget ‘B’ Championship title by a score of 5-4.  Akwesasne was lead by 2 third period goals by Dalston Day while Garrett Lewis had three points in the loss for Owen Sound.

After the first period of the Under Armour/OLA Midget ‘C’ final appeared to be a runaway, Whitby 2 and Shelburne delivered an exciting championship.  Whitby 2 held a commanding 6-1 lead after the first period.  Shelburne was able to hold Whitby 2 off the scoreboard in the second which allowed them to chip away at their deficit.  By the end of the second, Shelburne had pulled to within one goal.  The teams traded goals in the third and Whitby 2 held on 8-7 to claim the Midget ‘C’ Championship.  Shelburne’s comeback was lead by Dan Craig (2g, 4a) and Todd Greer (3g) while Whitby 2 was propelled by Dakota Kettrick (4g, 1a) and Tanner Theede (2g, 1a).

Innisfil took home the Under Armour/OLA Midget ‘D’ Championship 5-2 over Peterborough 2 with strong goaltending and offensive performances from Kyle Neto (2g), Colin Mawdsley (2g), and Kevin Robinson (1g, 1a).  Dylan Hutchison had a strong game for Peterborough 2 with assists on both Lakers’ goals.

In the Under Armour/OLA Midget ‘E’ final, Gloucester matched up with Huntsville for an entertaining championship.  Huntsville took a 3-2 lead into the second period and extended it to 6-2 after two periods.  Gloucester fell short of the comeback and Huntsville clinched the Midget ‘E’ title 6-4.  Huntsville’s top scorer was Mason Lonsdale with 2g, 1a while Gloucester’s Dylan Armitage turned in one goal and two assists.
