WHITBY CROWNED TYKE A CHAMPIONS

August 17, 2010 – The Toronto Rock/OLA Tyke Provincial Lacrosse Championships took centre stage at the Ontario Lacrosse Festival on August 3rd as four champions were crowned in different divisions.

The Tyke competition was the first to see two teams from the same zone battle it out for the right to be named provincial champion.

The Toronto Rock/OLA Tyke A Championship featured a zone matchup in its finale.  Whitby and Peterborough delivered identical performances in the first period, each scoring three goals and incurring one penalty.  The second period was the decisive one as Whitby took a 6-3 lead going into the third period.  Peterborough was unable to keep Whitby off the scoreboard and could not mount a comeback as Whitby was crowned the Toronto Rock/OLA Tyke A Champions with a 9-5 final.  Peterborough was lead by team captain Adam Thistlethwaite and Boyd Stahlbaum who contributed two goals each, while Whitby was lead by Matthew McCullough’s impressive 4g, 2a performance.

The Tyke B Championship featured the first zone-final championship of the 2010 Festival.  Centre Wellington edged out Owen Sound 7-6 to win the Toronto Rock/OLA Tyke B Championship.  Owen Sound held a 3-2 lead after the first period of play but was outscored in the final two periods.  Centre Wellington completed the comeback with much of their scoring from Mitch Lee (4g, 1a), Jakson Kirk (2g), and Tyler Needham (1g, 2a).

The Tyke C Championship featured Windsor and Shelburne.  Shelburne took a 2-1 lead going into the second period.  They extended their lead to 4-1 going into the third.  Despite not scoring in the final frame, Shelburne was able to hang on for a 4-2 victory, earning the Toronto Rock/OLA Tyke C Championship.  Shelburne was lead by Alex Crowley’s 2 goal performance for the victory.

In the Tyke D final, Halton Hills 2 took on Brantford.  The teams were fairly evenly matched and the teams traded goals in the first for a 2-2 tie.  Halton Hills 2 took a 4-3 lead going into the third but could not hold off a surging Brantford team.  Brantford completed the comeback in the last minute of play on the 5th goal of the night from captain Justin Jonsen.  Spencer Booth of Halton Hills 2 had an impressive game of his own with 4g, 1a in the losing effort.
